Why We Plan 90 Days Out (and You Should Too)

It’s that time of year again.

The end-of-year hustle is picking up steam. Holiday travel is on the calendar. And if you’re an entrepreneur, CEO, or CFO—your brain is probably bouncing between wrapping up Q4 and wondering how to make next year even better.

Back in the day, we didn’t really “plan.”
We’d roll into January with a few goals in our heads and hope the momentum would carry us through.

Spoiler alert: That’s not a strategy.

At Eclipse Creative, we’ve learned the hard way that if you wait until after the holidays to plan for the new year—you’re already behind.

Now? We dedicate the entire fourth quarter to a 90-day planning sprint.
Here’s what that looks like—and why it works.

Why 90 Days Out?

Because great years don’t happen by accident.

By starting in early Q4, we:

✅ Give ourselves time to reflect on what’s worked
✅ Set clear goals while we still have runway
✅ Create alignment before the holiday slowdown
✅ Let our team unplug during the holidays without anxiety
✅ Hit the ground running January 1st—focused, clear, and fired up

It’s about momentum. Morale. And making sure our next chapter is our strongest yet.

Step 1: Build the Budget (Realistically)

We kick things off with the numbers.

What’s coming in?
What’s going out?
Where do we want to be—and more importantly, where do we need to be?

Even though the year isn’t over, by October or early November, we usually have a solid read on how we’ll finish. That gives us enough information to make smart projections—and adjust our sails if we need to.

Waiting until the very end of December? That’s like trying to plan your route after you’ve already started driving.

Step 2: Market with Intention

Next up: Marketing.

This part’s fun for us—after all, igniting brands is what we do.

We set aside two full days for a deep dive into how we’ll show up in 2026:

  • Who are we targeting?
  • What channels are working?
  • What do we want people to feel when they see our work?
  • What new stories do we want to tell?

It’s creative. It’s collaborative. And it gives our team space to dream—and then design—what’s next.

Step 3: Operations & Strategic Planning

After marketing, it’s time to get under the hood.

We’ll hold a dedicated offsite session for our operations team. We’ll ask hard questions:

  • Where can we improve the customer experience?
  • What processes need tightening?
  • What systems are slowing us down?
  • What support does our team need to thrive?

This part isn’t flashy—but it’s where the real magic happens.

Step 4: Sales Strategy & Dream Clients

Next, we gather our sales reps, account managers, and cross-functional leaders.

We talk about:

  • Who we loved working with this year
  • What industries or segments we want to break into
  • Who’s on our “dream client” list—and how we plan to reach them
  • How we’ll strengthen existing relationships while building new ones

This meeting always brings energy—it gets everyone thinking about the impact we can make next year.

Step 5: Rally the Whole Team

Even the best plan means nothing without the who.

That’s why our final step is a company-wide rally—a moment to align everyone behind the vision, clarify ownership, and create momentum.

We answer:

  • Who owns what?
  • What does success look like in each area?
  • How will we support each other across departments?
  • And most importantly—how do we make sure this plan isn’t just a document… but a movement?

We want everyone excited. Engaged. Clear.
That’s how you build a strong start and a strong finish.

And Yes—There’s Still Time for Family

One of the best parts of planning ahead?

When the holidays arrive, we’re ready to unplug.

No scrambling. No late nights in December. Just space to enjoy our families, recharge, and come back in January with clear minds and full hearts.

That alone is worth starting 90 days out.

If you haven’t started your 2026 planning yet—there’s still time. But don’t wait.

The best year of your business won’t start in January.

It starts right now.
